Great post. Good point about sustainability not being a big burden on the bottom line.

Thad,

To me it show the value, the message is the hard part. There are examples in the publishing industry as well, but I don't feel like the message in that industry is as clearly communicated as it should be, wondering what you see.

It is heartening to hear that business leaders are taking the long view on both the current recession and the global environmental problems we face. More so, than, perhaps, the America public, who in a recent survey ranked climate change way down the list as the number 20 issue they are concerned about! Yet if business lead, people will follow. There has been a surge in interest in a short, intensive summer course in Sustainable Business here at the University of Vermont's Institute for Global Sustainability (http://learn.uvm.edu/igs/). The Institute offers a Professional Certificate in Sustainable Business for individual interested in helping businesses both do well and have a positive impact. I hope this signals a real change in the worldview and interests among our country's entrepreneurs...

Great point Fred. Often times if we take time to look past the facade we see that the truth is being stretched at best. The only solution I can think of would be some sort of sustainable federal certification. However, that still doesn't stop the false "green" advertising. Better awareness and posts like yours will be the only solution to that.

Interesting tack here from major energy sector player. No matter the intent or perspective, this will push matters more squarely into the forefront of business and legislative agendas.

Well stated. Would love to learn about real life, down to earth, examples of how sustainability, or 'do good', has financially benefited small to larger firms, or "do well.

In our business (Open Blue Sea Farms) of providing a sustainable supply of healthy and delicious seafood, I think of 'sustainability' as a real life place in our enterprise. A spot on our chart. It's marked at the intersection of economic interests and the interests of society and our environment.

And good morning to you Fred.

I read your blog with great interest. Maybe MEDIA MECHANIX can be part of the solution by creating quality audio-video content for the web that will ultimately replace the gigantic use of naural materials inherent in communications and advertising. At least I like to think so.

I wish you luck in the struggle to bring us all together.

Happy 2009!
